The innovation behind <strong>KOKONO\u2122<\/strong> lies in the fact that it was conceived specifically to meet the needs of low-income communities. This comes through in its <strong>design<\/strong>, created by our collaborator \u2013 designer <strong>Enrico Bassi<\/strong> \u2013 following a research field study organized by Lucia Dal Negro and John Walugembe (Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises Uganda), during which information and preferences were gathered directly from potential end users of the cradle (mothers, doctors, nurses, VHTs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed to be versatile, sturdy, and functional, Kokono\u2019s features are original starting from the choice of <strong>materials<\/strong>, of which 80% of the product (the entire orange, pink, or blue shell) is made from plastics with the highest biodegradability compared to conventional plastics*; from its inclusive <strong>business model<\/strong>, which enables entry into the Ugandan market at an <strong>affordable price<\/strong> point for a target group with limited spending capacity; and from the <strong>partnerships<\/strong> that strengthen it\u2014public, private, and nonprofit\u2014representing a growth opportunity for all, truly all, local stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*The material used for the cradle\u2019s shell lasts as long as conventional plastics but, if abandoned in an aerobic environment, it is broken down by bacteria and transformed into humus, methane, water, and CO\u2082 in a shorter time than conventional plastics.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a consumer perspective, <strong>KOKONO\u2122<\/strong>\u2019s main feature is its versatility: it can also be used as a baby bath cradle and as a play area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>KOKONO\u2122<\/strong> was conceived and designed in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Health (SDG 3)<\/strong>\u00a0\u27f9 The diffusion of <strong>KOKONO\u2122<\/strong> helps protect newborns (0\u201312 months) from exposure to the three main health and safety risks: infectious diseases\u2014including malaria, which, when contracted in the first months of life, proves fatal in over 80% of cases\u2014accidental injuries, and animal attacks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Safe infrastructure and environments (SDG 11)<\/strong>\u00a0\u27f9 <strong>KOKONO\u2122<\/strong> is an affordable product, designed specifically for the usage and spatial needs typical of rural and peri-urban households in developing countries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Women\u2019s empowerment (SDG 5)<\/strong>\u00a0\u27f9 <strong>KOKONO\u2122<\/strong> responds to the needs of women living in rural or peri-urban areas, whose livelihood depends on daily work in the fields or small-scale retail. In both cases, women must leave home and, since it is impossible to carry a newborn on their back all day, they are forced either to leave the child on the ground for hours or to give up working (or attending school) until the baby is old enough to follow them. This limits their opportunities to achieve economic independence and access education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sustainable production and consumption (SDG 12)<\/strong>\u00a0\u27f9 <strong>KOKONO\u2122<\/strong> is a solid, reusable object that minimizes the trends of accumulation or premature product replacement typical of mass consumption models. The absence of packaging reduces non-recyclable waste, lowering its environmental impact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\"><br><strong>DISCLAIMER<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color\"><strong>Some Kokono mosquito nets are treated. The product was designed to be stackable in order to save space and avoid boxes or coverings. All the components of the cradle are placed inside the cotton mattress cover. In our warehouse, the mattresses are covered with a plastic sheet provided by our supplier, which serves to protect the product from dust. \n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">2) How do we manage logistics?<\/span><br> \nOur cradles are shipped via boda-boda (up to 10\/15 pieces). For larger quantities, it is the customer who collects the material. We recommend using public transport, but in Kampala this is not an easy option, which is why customers often arrange collection with a large truck that can carry everything at once, thus avoiding multiple trips.\n<\/p>\n<p> \n<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">3) When you say Kokono is \u201cMade in Uganda,\u201d what do you mean?<\/span><br>\nKokono is entirely produced and assembled in Uganda. The shell is locally manufactured, as well as the mattresses, mosquito nets, and handles. The instructions and stickers are printed locally and included in the sales kit by our team in Kampala.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">4) Do you involve local staff in the cradle\u2019s production process?<\/span><br>\nOf course. Since our suppliers are Ugandan, all the workers involved in the production of Kokono are local. Specifically, the supplier responsible for producing the mosquito nets and handles (custom-made for our cradle) employs women in vulnerable situations.
